LA VERNE, Calif. (KTLA) — Two California Highway Patrol officers were injured Saturday when a suspected drunk driver plowed into a construction zone in La Verne, then slammed into the back of a CHP cruiser.

The crash happened along the 210 freeway near Foothill Boulevard at around 1:30 a.m.

Because of construction, Caltrans had closed all but one lane of the freeway.

The officers were assisting with traffic at the construction zone when the incident happened.

Investigators believe the driver was under the influence when he drove his Mercedes-Benz into the back of the patrol car, then plowed down an embankment.

The two officers were taken to an area hospital, however, their injuries were not believed to be life threatening.

The driver suffered minor injuries, and was taken into custody at the scene of the crash.
