NEW YORK (KTLA) – Social media was buzzing Friday after “Sesame Street” icons Bert and Ernie were chosen to be on the cover of The New Yorker magazine in reaction to the Supreme Court’s recent same-sex marriage rulings.

The characters were shown on the cover, titled “Moment of Joy,” cuddling on a couch as they stare at a television with a screen shot of the Supreme Court justices.

Bert and Ernie have been the subject of speculation in the past.

In response to a 2011 petition urging “Sesame Street” to allow Bert and Ernie to get married, Sesame Street Workshop issued a statement insisting the puppets did not have a sexual orientation.

“Even though they are identified as male characters and possess many human traits and characteristics (as most Sesame Street Muppets™ do), they remain puppets, and do not have a sexual orientation,” the statement said.

The picture was posted by Jack Hunter, an independent artist, to Tumblr, according to The New Yorker.

“It’s amazing to witness how attitudes on gay rights have evolved in my lifetime,” the magazine quoted Hunter as saying.
