ANAHEIM, Calif. (KTLA) — An incoming freshman at Canyon High School died after collapsing during football practice, authorities said Thursday.
Mitchell Cook, 14, collapsed about 4:14 p.m. Wednesday on the practice field, school officials said.
“The incident occurred at the end of the football warm-up session just before the beginning of regular practice,” Michael L. Christensen, Superintendent of Schools wrote in a statement.
“The football staff attended to the student immediately in collaboration with an off-duty fireman who was on scene. CPR was administered and continued until the paramedics arrived,” Christensen said.
Cook later died at Kaiser Hospital in Anaheim.
“The school is providing mental health and counseling services to the family, students and Canyon High School community members who need assistance through the grieving process,” Christensen said.
A candlelight vigil was being arranged with the student’s family and Canyon students for this weekend, according to school officials.
