Balboa Pier Closed in Newport Beach Following Boat Crash

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (KTLA) – Balboa Pier was closed Monday in Newport Beach while inspectors checked the structure for damage, authorities said.

A boat hit the pier on Sunday night at about 8:15 p.m. and the structure may have been damaged.

Authorities said the boat “rubbed against the pier.”

But witnesses who were standing on the pier said they felt the boat hit it.

Eleven people were on board the vessel when the accident happened.

The Newport Beach Fire Department responded to the incident.

Witnesses said firefighters and lifeguards rescued people from the water, but no one was injured.

The pier was closed to make sure it was structurally intact, officials said.

The cause of the mishap was under investigation.
