Veteran NBA forward Lamar Odom checked into a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center Wednesday, according to People magazine.

A source close to the basketball star told the magazine, “He realized he needs help.”

The report comes less than a week after Odom was arrested on suspicion of  driving under the influence of alcohol and or drugs.

Odom, who previously played for the Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Clippers, was taken into custody Aug. 30 after he was spotted driving erratically on the 101 Freeway in the San Fernando Valley section of Los Angeles, according to the CHP report obtained by KTLA 5.

Odom was booked into the Van Nuys jail and posted $15,000 bail three hours later.

The New York native won two NBA championships as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers but was traded to the Dallas Mavericks in 2011.

On April 9, 2012, it was announced that Odom had parted ways with the Mavericks.

In a statement to ESPN, Odom said, “I’m sorry that things didn’t work out better for both of us, but I wish the Mavs organization, my teammates and Dallas fans nothing but continued success in the defense of their championship.”

On June 29, he was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers as part of a four-team deal.

But after one season, Odom was dropped by the team and became a free agent on July 1, 2013.

Various online sources, including the website TMZ, recently reported there was trouble in Odom’s marriage to Khloe Kardashian, and speculated about Odom allegedly abusing drugs.
