Two Ohio correctional officers were placed on administrative leave Tuesday pending the results of an investigation into the suicide of Cleveland kidnapper Ariel Castro.

Caleb Ackley and Ryan Murphy were on duty in the prison unit where Castro was housed the night he hanged himself with a bed sheet, JoEllen Smith, spokeswoman for the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction told CNN.

The two men had worked at the Correctional Reception Center in Orient, Ohio since 2007, Smith said.

Castro was house in protective custody because of his high-profile status, but was not on suicide watch.

The 52-year-old had pleaded guilty July 26 to 937 counts, including murder and kidnapping in the abductions of Amanda Berry, Michelle Knight and Gina DeJesus, in a deal with prosecutors that spared him the death penalty.

Castro was sentenced Aug. 1 to life in prison plus 1,000 years.
