In an only-in-L.A. scene, the city’s “Downtown on Ice” outdoor skating rink returned to Pershing Square Thursday morning in near record-breaking temperatures.

Before 1 p.m., it was already 91 degrees at the weather station at USC, near downtown, according to the National Weather Service.

Dozens of skaters waited outside the rink for its 11 a.m. opening ceremony, which featured skating exhibitions and a performance from the Pantages’ cast of the “The Lion King,” event officials announced on the rink’s website.

“Downtown on Ice” runs daily through the holiday season into January 2014, with extended hours during the week of Christmas.

Tickets to skate are $8 and can be purchased online or at the rink. Metro and Metrolink riders can get a $1 discount by showing their transit pass when they arrive.

On Friday, Nov. 15, KTLA will broadcast live from Pershing Square for our annual KTLA Morning News Skating Party. The event, which runs from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m., is freeĀ and open to the public. More details are available here.
