Villa Park High School Wrestling Coach Accused of Choking, Punching Student

A Villa Park High School wrestling coach was behind bars Thursday after allegedly choking and punching a student wrestler on campus, according to authorities.

Emmanuel Hugo Hernandez, 26, of Orange was arrested on suspicion of felony battery on a student Wednesday, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department stated in a news release.

Hernandez, a “walk-on” wrestling coach, allegedly grabbed a member of the wrestling team during afternoon practice and placed him in a choke hold until the student went unconscious, the sheriff’s department said.

Hernandez was accused of punching the unconscious student several times in the head, leaving a visible injury near his right ear, according to authorities.

The student was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Hernandez was later contacted and arrested by authorities at his home in Orange, the sheriff’s department stated.

He was being held on $100,000 bail.
