Police Warn Shoppers to Be Alert After Sexual Assault in Mall Parking Lot

Santa Ana police issued a warning for shoppers to pay attention to their surroundings and remain alert after a 19-year-old woman was robbed and sexually in a mall parking structure, authorities said Friday.

Officers responded reports of a robbery at the Westfield MainPlace Mall at 2800 North Main Street Wednesday around 5:30 p.m., according to a statement from the Santa Ana Police Department.

A woman told the officers the incident happened as she was getting into her car.

That’s when man pushed her into the vehicle, brandished a weapon and sexually assaulted her, the statement said.

The victim said she was able to escape and, as she ran for help, the man stole some of her property and fled.

The attacker was described by authorities as a black man in his early 20s, about 6 feet tall, weighing 150 pounds with curly hair.

Investigators said they were looking at surveillance video for possible clues.
