The incident occurred at 6:19 p.m. in the 13200 block of Rosecrans Avenue (map), where the victim was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a news release issued by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

After a white van pulled up to the bus stop, a man exited the vehicle, displayed a firearm and then shot and killed the victim, who was sitting on a bench, detectives told KTLA. The gunman fled and remained at large Sunday night.

The deceased man, whose name was not released, was described by authorities as being in his 40s, with possible gang affiliations and an extensive criminal history.

The shooting took place less than a block away from the Marquez Restaurant, which was bustling with patrons at the time.

The nearby intersection of Rosecrans and Claressa avenues was cordoned off as the investigation continued.
