The shooting happened at 1:00 a.m. in the 14100 block of Mulberry Drive (map), a news release from the department stated.

The incident began when detectives learned of a possible carjacking in Whittier. A Sheriff’s Department helicopter was able to locate the vehicle, which was discovered by deputies and Whittier police officers to have been abandoned, according to the release.

Authorities then began searching for two men in connection with the suspected carjacking. They found one of the men —  who was armed — at an apartment complex, officials said.

The man was subsequently shot in the left arm, the release stated. He was taken to a hospital where he was said to be in stable condition.

No officers or deputies were injured.

Authorities were still looking for the other man.

Anyone with information was asked to call the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department at 323-890-5500 or Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.
