Bomb Squad Called to Pacoima Middle School; Students Sent Outside

Students at Pacoima Middle School were sent to an athletic field on campus Thursday morning as they waited for a bomb squad to arrive and investigate a an unattended duffel bag.

The bag left in front of the middle school at 9919 Laurel Canyon Blvd. (map) was reported to authorities at about 8:20 a.m., Richard French of the Los Angeles Police Department said.

The street where the duffel bag was found was blocked off during the investigation, according to Monica Carazo, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Local residents were also forced to evacuate their homes, Carazo said.

By 11:30 a.m., students had been allowed to return to class, Cody Weireter, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department, said.

There was no word on what was inside the duffle bag or why it was left in front of the school.
