One man was in custody after a violent fight early Friday on a sidewalk in West Hollywood, authorities said.

Officers responded to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon shortly after 2 a.m. in the 8200 block of Sunset Boulevard (map), according to the Los Angeles Police Department’s Hollywood Division.

Two men were reportedly fighting when one of them brandished a bat and struck the other man with it.

After Los Angeles police, L.A. County sheriff’s deputies and firefighters responded to the scene, a man was treated by paramedics and taken away in an ambulance.

A third man was handcuffed and put into the back seat of a patrol car.

“The man who had the bat, I took it away from him and protected my friend,” he said, identifying himself as Matthew Valdez, a former Marine.

Darrell Porter, a bartender who was working across the street when the fight broke out, recorded part of it with his cellphone camera.

There was “a lot of scuffling, then the other kid grabbed [the bat and] threw that kid to the ground,” Porter said. “The other kid got up – baseball bat right to the temple. It was crazy.”

Authorities declined to provide further details about the incident.
