An investigation was underway Friday after a headless body was found in an Irwindale riverbed, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

A decapitated body was discovered by a person searching for recyclables near an Irwindale riverbed on Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014.

A passerby who made the grim discovery near the intersection of Foothill Boulevard and Irwindale Avenue (map) called the Irwindale Police Department shortly before 5:30 p.m. Thursday to report the body, a news release from the Sheriff’s Department stated.

The head was discovered about 20 feet from the body, Irwindale Police Chief Anthony Miranda told the Los Angeles Times. Investigators believed it had been there for about a week.

The identity of the victim, who was described as an adult male, remained unknown early Friday.

No further details were immediately available.

Anyone with information was asked to contact the Sheriff’s Department at 323-890-5500 or leave an anonymous tip by calling Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.
