A Garfield Elementary School math teacher has been arrested for having an alleged sexual relationship with a former female student, police confirmed on Tuesday.
Jeffrey Yoshitake, 42, was taken into custody on Friday on suspicion of lewd acts with a child, Lt. Bill Cuevas of the Monterey Park Police Department confirmed.
Yoshitake allegedly began the relationship with his former elementary school math student when she was in high school, Cuevas confirmed.
The alleged victim, now in her mid-20s, recently told police her relationship with Yoshitake began when she was 15 and lasted until 2012, according to Cuevas.
At the time the victim didn’t believe it was wrong, but thinking about it as an adult, she realized the relationship was unlawful, Cuevas told the San Gabriel Valley Tribune.
Yoshitake was placed on administrative leave and the district was cooperating with police, the newspaper reported.
Yoshitake was free on $100,000 bail and was set to appear in court on May 5.
Investigators believe the relationship was an isolated incident. Anyone with further information about the case was asked to call the Monterey Park Police Department at 626-307-1233.
