The man died after being hit by a truck on the northbound 5 freeway just north of Paramount Boulevard around 4:15 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

Two people were traveling southbound on the freeway when one of them got out of the vehicle, jumped over the center divider and dashed across northbound lanes, according to CHP Sgt. Cannon Brown.

The man was hit by a truck and killed, Brown said.

His identity had not yet been released.

The truck stopped at the scene.

The incident prompted the CHP to issue a SigAlert. At one point, all lanes were closed, but eventually one lane was reopened.

At one point, traffic was backed up for miles and moving at a crawl, video from the scene showed.

The SigAlert was canceled around 6:40 a.m., according to a tweet from the CHP.
