A FedEx big rig experienced technical issues around 11:50 p.m. causing the vehicle to stall between the third and fourth lane on the freeway, then a second big rig crashed into the back the FedEx truck and two SUVs crashed into the big rigs, Officer Denise Quesada with the CHP said.

The driver of the FedEx exited the vehicle and waited for assistance on the shoulder before the big rig was struck, according to a CHP news release.

The driver of the second big rig was transported to UCI Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 5:09 a.m., the report stated.

A driver of one of the SUVs is in the hospital due to injuries, Quesada said.

The Knott Avenue onramp and four lanes were blocked but reopened before 8 a.m., according to a CHP dispatcher.
