Officers responded to the Laemmle Theater in the 5200 block of Lankershim Boulevard (map) after receiving a report of a disturbance inside the theater shortly before 9:40 p.m., according to Lt. Albert Gavin with the Los Angeles Police Department.

When they arrived, officers attempted to speak with the man outside the theater, but he would not comply, Gavin said.

One witness described the unidentified man as “an older fellow” and said at some point he was screaming for help.

A struggle ensued on the ground, during which time the man allegedly bit one of the officers, according to police.

An officer then used his Taser, which struck the man and the other officer, Gavin said. They then both begin to have difficulty breathing, he added.

Both officers and the man were taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital, where the officers were treated and later released, according to Gavin.

The man remained hospitalized in unknown condition Monday morning, and it was not immediately clear if he was expected to survive.

The incident was under investigation.
