A reported barricade situation in a high-end duplex that forced some residents in Venice out of their homes early Sunday turned out to be a hoax, police said.
The response began around 1:00 a.m. on 28th Avenue between Speedway and Pacific after a threat involving a hostage situation was reported, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Officers were initially unable to make contact with the residents after the threat had been reported.
As the situation unfolded in the early morning hours, witnesses reported seeing helicopters overhead and snipers on rooftops.
“Ultimately officers did make entry inside the residence, and fortunately no one was hurt,” LAPD Capt. Vic Davalos said.
Some residents said they were evacuated from their homes between four and five hours while SWAT officers were on the scene.
