A man who said he was detained after deputies mistook him for a stabber in West Hollywood spoke out Sunday against the incident, which also led to the death of a man thought to be the perpetrator.

The sheriff’s department responded to reports of an “assault with a deadly weapon, man with a knife” at an apartment complex in the 900 block of Palm Avenue (map) on April 7.

The department said on Thursday that they mistakenly shot and killed John Winkler, 30.

Then on Sunday, Mattison Royalwood told KTLA that during the same incident he was mistaken for the stabber and detained.

Sara Welch reports live from West Hollywood for the KTLA 5 News at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 13, 2014.
