Willie Johnson, a 51-year-old transient, was taken into custody Thursday when officers found him walking in the 800 block of West Holt Avenue, according to Sgt. Hector Rodriguez of the Pomona Police Department.

The location is less than two miles from a 7-Eleven at 738 E. Holt Ave. (map), where Johnson on Tuesday allegedly punched Fouad Mokdad in the face and knocked him unconscious.

The incident was captured on video by one of the store’s surveillance cameras. Officers familiar with Johnson later identified him in the footage, police said.

Mokdad was transported to a hospital, where he was initially listed in critical condition, Rodriguez said in a statement. He has since been released and is expected to recover from his injuries.

After Johnson was detained, detectives obtained a written confession from him and filed a criminal charge — assault likely to cause great bodily injury — against him with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, authorities said.
