A Nissan Altima traveling westbound on East Florence Avenue collided with a tow truck just east of South Central Avenue (map) around 2:25 a.m., CHP Officer Michael Griffith said.

A passenger in the Nissan died and the driver was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, Griffith said.

The victim was later identified by Los Angeles County Department of Coroner Lt. David Smith as Luz Licea, 27.

The tow truck driver was not injured, CHP Officer Tony Polizzi said.

A vodka bottle was found inside the Nissan, investigators said.

Some witnesses reported the car was racing prior to the crash; Griffith said this could not be confirmed.

The surrounding area was closed while CHP investigated the crash.
