Rabbits found themselves on the endangered list at two senior communities in Mission Viejo on Monday after the city council voted to hire a pest control company to kill the creatures.

Residents of Casta del Sol and Palmia claimed the rabbits were not only a nuisance but also dangerous.

“They carry diseases,” Casta del Sol resident Carole Weilder said. “My husband had rabbit fever ten years ago.”

But not all residents agreed with the idea of killing the rabbits.

“I think it’s very inhumane and very unethical,” Palmia resident, Patricia Dick said.

Shooting and killing rabbits is prohibited, but the city council has made exceptions in the past for the two communities.
