Sidney McGee was standing in the 7500 block of South Central Avenue (map) about 6 p.m. when a male gunman walked toward him and began shooting in his direction, according to a statement issued by the Los Angeles Police Department.

Despite McGee’s attempted to hide between some vehicles that were parked on the street, he was struck by gunfire, police said.

Los Angeles firefighters responded to the scene and transported the victim to a hospital, where he later died of his injuries, authorities said.

The shooter, who remains at large, is of unknown race and was last seen wearing all black clothing, according to the LAPD statement.

No weapon was recovered at the scene. The motive was unknown.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Detective Refugio Garza or Detective Dominick Iasparro of the LAPD’s Criminal Gang and Homicide Division at 213-485-1383.
