A student at Long Beach City College was shot and wounded by police Thursday night after allegedly running through a classroom with a handgun and firing on officers.

The incident began as an argument in the campus parking lot between two people around 5:30 p.m., according to Long Beach police.

When two officers who were patrolling the area went over to investigate, one of the men ran away.

The officers chased him though an auto shop classroom with at least a half a dozen students inside, police said.

“As the officer went through the classroom and was exiting the classroom, the suspect was outside in a position waiting for the officer,” said Long Beach Police Chief Jim McDonnell. “A shot was fired, the officer returned fire and struck the suspect.”

The gunman was enrolled as a student at the college, school officials said.

The gunman was expected to be treated at a local hospital and then booked, according to police.
