A 25-year-old suspect was in custody Saturday after allegedly attempting to rob a man at knifepoint in Claremont, authorities said.

Cayetano Avila, of Pomona, was being held at the Claremont Police Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail, according to a news release.

The alleged incident began when a 58-year-old man was purchasing a train ticket at the Metrolink station located at 150 W. 1st Street.

“While he was facing the ticket kiosk, the suspect approached him from behind with a knife in his hand and attempted to forcibly grab the victim’s wallet out of his back pocket,” the release said. “The victim quickly turned and the suspect ran east on the train platform.”

The 58-year-old was not injured.

While conducting a search of the area, officers located Avila at the intersection of Indian Hill Boulevard and American Avenue. He threw the knife into some bushes as the officers approached him, according to authorities.

Avila later admitted to committing the crime, police said. He is expected to be arraigned on Tuesday.
