The crash occurred around 3 a.m. near Truba Avenue and Kansas Avenue (map), according to people who lived in the area.

A South Gate Police Department patrol vehicle and gray-pickup truck were involved in the crash, video of the scene showed.

The truck driver then allegedly attempted to flee the scene. Officials were also investigating if the truck had been stolen.

Both drivers were transported to a local hospital, L.A. County Fire Department supervisor Flores said.

The officer was in serious but stable condition. The condition of the second driver was not immediately known.
