The dogs were attacked on Sunday while the family was away, said owner Heather Umphenours.

When the family returned home Sunday night, they discovered that their rescued German shepherd-mix dogs had been stung hundreds of times.

One of the dogs, Luna, died in the attack, Umphenours said.

Her brother Wolf was being treated at the Inland Valley Emergency Pet Clinic.

The family had cut back some lemon trees in their yard the day before the attack, but Umphenours said no one saw any sign of bees or a hive.

A family friend has set up a GoFundMe account help raise money for Wolf's vet bills, which were expected to exceed $6,000.
