Florida Police Officer, Formerly With NYPD, Is Killed

Florida police officer who was a former member of the New York Police Department was shot and killed early Sunday morning while responding to a routine service call.

Tarpon Springs Police Officer Charles Kondek was shot about 3 a.m., the Pinellas County Sheriff’s office said in a statement. Kondek was transported to Florida Hospital North Pinellas, where he was pronounced dead.

The sheriff’s office did not release information on a suspect who was arrested after allegedly fleeing the scene or on a motive for the shooting. The investigation is ongoing.

Tarpon Springs, Fla., is about 30 miles northwest of Tampa and has about 24,000 residents.
