Sheriff's investigators were searching Wednesday for a man who scammed a first-time car buyer from Lomita out of $5,500 after the victim answered an ad placed on Craigslist.

The 23-year-old victim, "Michael," arranged a meeting with the alleged seller on Sunday and even brought his cousin along to check out the vehicle.

While his cousin was exchanging money for the pink slip, Michael took pictures of the seller and his identification.

Moments after handing over the cash, Michael realized the pink slip was a fake. But before he could do anything, Michael said the man was gone.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department was investigating, and holding the car as evidence.
