Authorities are searching for a gunman Friday after a man was shot to death on the train tracks near a Metro Blue Line station in Compton in an attack that was captured on cellphone video.
The shooting took place near the Artesia Blue Train Station located in the 1900 block of Acacia Avenue (map) at about 8:45 a.m., according to a news release from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
Witnesses told investigators that two men were involved in a physical altercation on a ramp that led away from the station when one of them pulled out a gun, fired, and then ran away.
The man chased after the shooter, who then turned and fired several more times, according to the Sheriff's Department.
The victim was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead from the gunshot wounds.
Gunshots could be heard on cell phone video recorded at the scene. A number of people could also be heard screaming as the victim fell to the ground in a grassy area near the station.
An armed security officer saw the shooting and fired at the fleeing gunman, however, it was unclear if the security guard hit the man, investigators said.
The gunman was described as a black man, wearing dark clothing and a baseball cap. He was last seen running northbound along the railroad tracks away from the train station.
