A South Carolina man was severely beaten after he allegedly sexually assaulted his nephew’s girlfriend after the couple returned home from a New Year’s Eve party, according to a local newspaper report.

Officers responded to a residence on Highway 905 in Conway shortly before 1 a.m. on New Year’s Day after receiving a report of a sexual assault, according to a post on the Conway Police Department’s Facebook page.

When they arrived, officers found the suspect, 52-year-old William Mattson, was injured by someone “acting in defense for the victim,” the post stated.

According to a report in The Sun News, a Myrtle Beach-based newspaper, the suspect’s nephew had brought his girlfriend over to his father’s home early Thursday after the two had attended a party.

The nephew then briefly left the house.

When he returned, the nephew allegedly found Mattson — who also lived in the home — on top of his girlfriend, the newspaper reported, citing a police report.

He then began repeatedly hitting his uncle, driving him away from the house, according to the paper.

The victim told officers she had been sexually assaulted by Mattson, the Facebook post stated.

The injured suspect was arrested and charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct, according to the post.
