Two armed men wearing monkey and gorilla masks burst into a popular business in Los Angeles’ Fairfax neighborhood on Thursday afternoon in what police were calling a "brazen daytime robbery."
Officers were called to the 7800 block of Melrose Avenue (map) just before 1 p.m. after a report that three individuals had robbed a business, Los Angeles Police Department Officer Drake Madison said.
Police later confirmed that only two robbers were involved in the heist.
Surveillance video showed the masked gunmen threatening the store clerk with two semi-auto hand guns before stealing numerous shoe boxes.
The boxes contained pairs of Nike Jordan Shoes for women, according to a news release from police.
After the robbery, the men left the scene in a car described by police as a later model gray Nissan Altima with 4-doors and paper plates.
The men were described as Black or Hispanic, between 18 and 25 years old, standing between 5 feet 7 and 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighing around 150 to 160 pounds.
One of the men was wearing a gray shirt, blue jeans, light blue gloves and a monkey face mask. The other was dressed in a red shirt, blue jeans, light blue gloves and a gorilla mask.
Madison would not say what kind of business was robbed, but officers were seen talking to employees inside a popular high-end sneaker store called Melrose Athletic Supply.
The store sells pairs that range from $200 to $1,000, according to listings on its website.
The address given by police is across Melrose Avenue from Fairfax High School, where the block includes a cafe, record store, and the sneaker shop, among other businesses.
