A big rig trying to negotiate a right turn took out a fire hydrant and a light pole Friday in Van Nuys, and the collision and resulting geyser of water was caught on surveillance video.

Firefighters were called to a report of a sheared hydrant at Van Nuys Boulevard and Sylvan Street (map) at about 12:50 p.m., the Los Angeles Fire Department’s Brian Humphrey said.

Surveillance video taken at Lil’ Zeke’s Bail Bonds, across the street, showed the big rig slowly turning right from Van Nuys onto eastbound Sylvan.

The truck’s trailer bumped up onto the curb, then knocked over the light post holding a blue street sign, the video shows. As the trailer continued to move forward, a four-story geyser erupted behind it.

“This was one of my worst nightmares as a truck driver,” wrote the man who gave KTLA the video.

There were no reports of any injuries, and the water was turned off about 1:20 p.m., Humphrey said.
