An autopsy was set to be conducted Tuesday on a 4-year-old Fresno girl who died over the weekend after getting her head stuck in metal security bars that covered a window at her family’s home, authorities said.

Estefanie Duque had been left alone inside her room for 30 minutes Sunday afternoon when a relative outside the house noticed the girl’s head was stuck between the bars, according to a news release from the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators said she had apparently been trying to climb out her bedroom window, but they were unsure why.

A family member called 911 while other relatives, who had been in another room of the residence at the time, worked to free her head from the metal bars.

The girl was not breathing when paramedics arrived and performed CPR on her. She was rushed to an area hospital where she was later pronounced dead, authorities said.

Although Estefanie’s death was ruled accidental based on a preliminary investigation, homicide detectives were continuing to investigate because of the “unusual circumstances of the case,” the release stated.

A medical examination was scheduled Tuesday to determine a cause of death, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
