Gayle Anderson was live in Yorba Linda for Presidents Day, a national holiday that celebrates all U.S. presidents past and present. It is celebrated on the third Monday in February. Originally established in 1885 in honor of President George Washington, it is still officially called “Washington’s Birthday” by the federal government.

The Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum invites the public to celebrate Presidents Day and watch Mount Rushmore come to life at its “Presidents Day Celebration”  today from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This event features the Presidents of Mount Rushmore, who will be at the library and in costume. Visitors can meet, ask questions, and take photos with President George Washington, President Thomas Jefferson, President Abraham Lincoln and President Teddy Roosevelt all day.

Carved into the Black Hills of South Dakota, Mount Rushmore National Memorial features the faces of four former presidents of the United States: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. These men were chosen to represent the first 150 years of American history and America’s cultural heritage. The monumental sculpture was created by Gutzon Borglum. It took 400 workers 14 years to build the sculpture at a cost of $989,992.32. Almost three million visitors a year from across the country and around the world visit Mount Rushmore to view the monument and learn about its design and construction as well as the natural and cultural history of the Black Hills region.

In the evening, attend a special Presidents Day lecture and book signing featuring Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Edward Larson. Mr. Larson will give a lecture based on his book, “The Return of George Washington: 1783-1789,” which takes a new look at George Washington’s career after the American Revolution. This FREE lecture and book signing begin at 6:00 p.m. and is open to the public. To make a reservation, click HERE.

Admission to the Nixon Library is FREE all day TODAY, Presidents Day. Doors open at 10 a.m. The first 100 guests will enjoy a FREE slice of cherry pie. For more information, click HERE.

The Richard Nixon Foundation is a not-for-profit organization located on the campus of the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum. The Nixon Foundation built and has operated the Library and Birthplace for 17 years (1990-2007) without any taxpayer dollars. In 2007, the Foundation agreed to become part of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) system of Presidential Libraries. As a result, a new 18,000 square foot storage facility was built and the Presidential papers, artifacts, and audiovisual materials were moved to Yorba Linda, so that the President’s birthplace, memorials, galleries, and records are all at one location.
