A homeless man locked himself inside a Van Nuys Starbucks bathroom before setting himself on fire and running out engulfed in flames Tuesday morning, authorities said.

The blaze was already out by the time firefighters arrived at the coffee shop’s location at 15355 West Sherman Way (map) shortly before 8:20 a.m., according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The man entered the Starbucks location’s bathroom and then bystanders heard an “explosive sound” in the area. The man staggered from the bathroom “engulfed in flames,” according to the Fire Department’s Erik Scott.

The man, described only as about 60 years old, collapsed near the Starbucks entrance, where patrons helped put the flames out.

Firefighters rendered medical aid and took him to a local hospital in critical condition, Scott said.

The burns, which covered 90 percent of the man’s body, appear to be “self-inflicted,” Scott said.

The incident was believed to be a suicide attempt, Los Angeles Police Department Officer Liliana Preciado said. She confirmed a Los Angeles Times report describing the victim as homeless.

The Fire Department’s Arson Section was investigating the incident.
