A 2-year-old boy was killed after wandering outside his Santa Ana home and getting struck by a vehicle Saturday night, police said.

The toddler was discovered lying in the middle of the roadway at the intersection of Newhope and Flight streets just before 10 p.m., a Santa Ana Police Department news release said.

He was transported by the Orange County Fire Authority to an area hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The unidentified victim was hit by a white Toyota Camry traveling northbound on Newhope Street, according to the release. It appeared he had wandered from his home about a block away and was not in an adjacent crosswalk when the incident occurred.

The driver — who remained at the scene following the collision and was cooperating with investigators — told police he did not see the toddler on the roadway.

Authorities said it did not appear alcohol or speed were a factor in the fatal crash.

An investigation into the collision was ongoing. Anyone who witnessed it was asked to call Santa Ana police Investigator Hadley at 714-245-8216.
