Officers were in the area of West Slauson Avenue and South Broadway Street (map) at about 11:50 p.m. when a man allegedly looked in their direction and reached for his waistband, the Los Angeles Police Department stated in a news release describing the incident.

The man, said to be about 20 years old and Hispanic, allegedly refused to comply with the officers’ commands and fled southbound on South Broadway Street toward a mixed residential and business area.

After temporarily loosing sight of the man, officers said they spotted him again on a rooftop in the 5800 block of South Broadway Street.

The man allegedly pointed a gun at authorities and at least one officer opened fire, according to the news release.

Following the shooting, the man fled again but eventually surrendered without further incident after police set up a perimeter in the area.

The man was taken to a local hospital where he was listed in critical, but stable condition, according to the Police Department.

The man’s gun was allegedly recovered at the scene.

No officers were injured during the incident, according to the news release.

The shooting was being investigated by the Force Investigation Division and would ultimately be reviewed by LAPD Chief Charlie Beck, the Police Department stated.
