An autopsy was scheduled to be conducted on a 3-year-old boy after police discovered his mother pushing the deceased toddler on a swing at a Maryland park Friday morning.

Shortly before 7 a.m., the Charles County Sheriff’s Office received a call regarding a woman who had been pushing a toddler at Wills Memorial Park in La Plata for an unusually long time, according to CNN affiliate WJLA-TV.

“We think she was there as of yesterday. We don’t know if she ever left during the night. It doesn’t appear that she did,” said Diane Richardson of the Sheriff’s Office.

Officers responded and immediately realized the toddler was dead. He had no obvious signs of trauma, the television station reported.

The child’s body was taken taken to the Office of the Medical Examiner in Baltimore, where his cause of death would be determined, according to WJLA. It was not known when he died.

His 24-year-old mother was questioned by investigators before she was transported to an area medical center for evaluation. According to the station, the unidentified woman was not facing any charges as of Friday.

“It’s a terribly sad case. I know it was hard for the officers to go there and see that,” Richardson told the station.

The incident remained under investigation.
