Authorities received a call at 5:20 a.m. about a man in the 20300 block of Avalon Boulevard (map) threatening to kill himself or shoot officers if they tried to approach him, Sgt. Binion of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.

The man had barricaded himself inside a van in a¬†McDonald’s parking lot, Binion said.

Nearby businesses were evacuated during the standoff and crisis negotiators were called to the scene, Binion said.

Authorities did not confirm if the man actually had a gun.
