 Today, June 14th is Flag Day! We can see this unusual exhibition about the American Flag at The Geffen Contemporary at the Museum of Contemporary Art.

 It’s titled TRINKET by Chicago based artist William Pope L. The artist says he custom made this 54 by 16 feet flag featuring an extra star and dramatic lighting, kept waving by four special effects fans, to illustrate the complexities of democratic engagement and participation.  

 The exhibition for TRINKET is FREE today, Flag Day at The Geffen.

This is SPECIAL OLYMPICS SUMMER GAMES weekend in Long Beach.  More than one-thousand athletes are competing in aquatics, track and field, basketball, bocce, golf and gymnastics on the campus of CalState Long Beach. This event is FREE for everyone to attend.

In addition to the competitions, there will be a Special Olympics Festival that features games, live entertainment, community and law enforcement exhibits, and more. Visitors can pick up Special Olympics souvenirs and merchandise at Rafer’s Boutique. Children with intellectual disabilities, ages 2.5 to 7, can participate in the Young Athletes Program demonstration, which focuses on activities important to mental/physical growth. The Young Athletes Program is an early introduction to sports and to the world of the Special Olympics. The Healthy Athlete Village offers FREE health screenings for athletes. A 1968 living room with a Huey helicopter actually used in Vietnam in the middle of it. This will certainly get your attention at this new exhibition at the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana. It’s the 1968 Exhibit.

The state of the art, multimedia exhibit examines the social forces of the turbulent 1960’s that crested in 1968.

Keep an eye on the founder and president of The Recycledman Foundation, Derek Fitzgerald. He is biking from California to New Jersey to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Derek is a lymphoma survivor, a heart transplant recipient, and the finisher of multiple Ironman triathlons, marathons, and cycling events - as well as a passionate and visible advocate for cancer research and organ donation and transplantation.

Adding to the heat and mountainous climbs of the 3,400 mile challenge, Derek will also be training for another pair of Ironman triathlons to follow the Tour For a Cure - Ironman Mont-Tremblant in August and the Ironman World Championship in October. This means that at each of Derek’s 43 scheduled overnight stops his mission will include several more committed hours for swim and marathon training.
