A man in his 30s was shot and critically wounded Friday night during a confrontation with police in a quiet neighborhood in Los Feliz.

The victim was allegedly trying to flag down officers with the LAPD's Security Services Department on Los Feliz Boulevard around 6:30 p.m., according to Lt. John Jenal with the Los Angeles Police Department.

Officers said the man had a towel wrapped around his arm as if he needed help.

When they pulled over to investigate, the unidentified man extended his arm toward the officers, according to Jenal.

"The officer exited the vehicle and quickly said, 'drop the gun, drop the gun' and an officer involved shooting occurred," Jenal said.

The man was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

It was not known if he was armed.

Security Services officers are responsible for law enforcement and security services for city facilities, according to the city's website.
