United Airlines passengers began boarding their flights Wednesday morning after a delay caused by an unknown technical issue prompted all flights to be grounded nationwide, the FAA confirmed.
It was unclear when the technical issue began, but tweets from United Airlines passengers as early as 5:30 a.m. stated they were delayed. Several tweets from Los Angeles International Airport police confirmed there were significant delays.
"We experienced a network connectivity issue," United Airlines tweeted around 6:45 a.m. "We are working to resolve and apologize for any inconvenience."
The FAA also confirmed there was "a ground stop on all United flights due to a computer problem."
United Airlines' computer system was "slowly coming back" online and people would begin boarding their flights "shortly," police with LAX tweeted around 6:45 a.m.
Flights resumed nationwide, CNN reported shortly after 7 a.m., and Sky5 aerial footage showed the first United flight leaving LAX around that time.
LAX officials said passengers should still expect delays.
“The good news is the system’s back up and they are starting to process people, but these long line, it’s going to take some time,” said Mary Grady, director of media operations at LAX.
Because of the technical issue, tickets could not be checked and flights could not be monitored, effectively grounding flights, a spokesperson with LAX said.
For hours, United employees were forced to hand write tickets for passengers at several airports, including LAX.
“Because this happened early, it’s going to be easier to recover," Grady said. "You haven’t had as many flights, you don’t have that cascading effect, so it’ll be a little easier to recover. But that’s hard to say to someone when they’re standing in this long line."
Hundreds of people could be seen waiting outside United Terminals 7 and 8 at LAX before flights resumed, Sky5 aerials showed.
"People, as you can see, are being really patient and really great about it,” Grady said.
The long lines were gone and departure level traffic was moving by 9 a.m., airport police tweeted.
Grady suggested passengers check with United to see when their flights were expected to depart, and get to the airport early.
Passengers who checked in for their United flight online Tuesday, printed their boarding pass and did not plan to check-in luggage would not have to wait in the long lines seen outside the airport, Grady added.
One passenger who waited in the lines told KTLA she was from Albuquerque, New Mexico, and was headed to a family reunion in Hawaii.
After learning flights were beginning to board, she, along with dozens of other people in line, cheered.
About an hour before United Airlines confirmed that there was an issue, the airline tweeted at several passengers who were delayed, saying they were working as quickly as possible to fix the issue.
Details about what the technical issue was were not provided.
Technical issues also impacted the New York Stock Exchange Wednesday morning, which temporarily halted all trading. Neither incident showed signs of malicious activity, the Department of Homeland Security told CNN.
