Police were searching Wednesday for the person who fatally stabbed a woman in Long Beach, officials said.

A battery call was reported to police in the 5500 block of Long Beach Boulevard (map) around 11:20 p.m. Tuesday, according to Long Beach Police Department Lt. Mark Coble.

A woman, who had been stabbed in her upper torso, was found unresponsive and officers performed "life-saving measures" until paramedics arrived.

She was transported to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead, Coble said.

What led up to the attack was unknown.

No one was in custody as of Wednesday morning and police did not offer a description of the assailant.
