A driver led police on a high-speed pursuit through two Orange County cities Thursday evening before fatally shooting himself with a handgun, an official said.

The chase began in Buena Park after officers attempted to stop a stolen 2003 Lexus, said Cpl. Bret Carter, a spokesman for the Buena Park Police Department.

The pursuit continued on streets in Anaheim before returning to Buena Park, where the unidentified male driver entered the eastbound 91 Freeway at North Brookhurst Street and began heading in the wrong direction, according to the corporal.

The driver then exited the vehicle, ran across the freeway and hunkered down amid some construction equipment located along the westbound Brookhurst onramp, police said.

After officers conducted a search and discovered the driver, Carter said, they heard a single gunshot that was he was believed to have fired. Police then found the driver deceased under a tractor trailer, having suffered an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, the spokesman said.
