An elderly woman was hospitalized in serious condition after being stabbed Friday evening during an attempted robbery in Montebello, police said.

The incident happened about 8:20 p.m. in the 600 block of North Hendricks Street, the Montebello Police Department said in a news release.

No information about the assailant was immediately available, the statement said.

Hendricks was closed at the scene as an investigation got underway.
