A teenager has been arrested after allegedly injuring an 84-year-old Wal-Mart employee who tried to stop him from stealing bicycles from the store’s La Quinta location on Thursday, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies were dispatched to the Wal-Mart shortly before 5:40 p.m. and found the victim, sheriff’s officials said in a news release. They learned he had been physically attacked and injured while trying to stop a young male, who was allegedly attempting to steal two bikes.

The suspected thief — identified only as a 13-year-old male — managed to get away with one of the bicycles, according to the release.

Deputies checked the surrounding area and found the teen near the La Quinta Park, which is located at Blackhawk Way and Adams Street.

He was arrested and booked into the Indio Juvenile Hall on suspicion of robbery, the release stated. The stolen bicycle was also recovered.

The victim was treated at the Wal-Mart for his injuries by Cal Fire paramedics.

No further information about the incident has been released.
