An Oregon man reportedly saw a dead rodent in his friend’s sandwich when they stopped at a Subway restaurant earlier this month, a local television station reported Wednesday.

Matt Jones told KGW the incident happened as an employee was making sandwiches for him and a friend at the Lincoln City restaurant on Oct. 6.

Jones saw the dead mouse once the employee grabbed a handful of spinach out of the bin and dropped it onto the bread.

“It’s the funniest thing I’ve ever seen, but it’s also the most disgusting thing I’ve ever seen,” Jones told KGW, recalling his initial reaction. “I laughed because I was like, there is no way this just happened.”

Jones posted an image of the dead rodent on Facebook.

The county health department was immediately notified and conducted an investigation, KGW reported.

“The investigation determined that the rodent problem did not come from inside the facility. It was probably in a bag of the bagged spinach product, not from the facility itself,” Cheryl Connell, director of Lincoln County Health and Human Services, told the television station. “Everything was sanitized and cleaned properly afterwards.”

Health Department officials said the risk of anyone else becoming sick from eating the same batch of spinach was very low, KGW reported.
