Sheriff's investigators were at the scene of a deadly crash in Carson Tuesday night involving a tractor-trailer hauling a shipping container that became dislodged and fell onto a passing bicyclist, killing him.

The truck was traveling on South Santa Fe Avenue near Warnock Way around 5:05 p.m. when the container somehow tumbled off, according to the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department.

The container hit the pavement, crushing a man who was riding his bike on the sidewalk nearby, according to Lt. Arthur Escamillas with LASD's Carson Station.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Aerials from the scene showed the container lying on its side about 15 feet behind the flat-bed truck.

Authorities were investigating the possibility that the container hit an overhanging railroad bridge, which pushed it off the truck, Escamillas said.

The victim had not been identified.
